Price: $3 to $5

I love discovering good food in a surprising place, and Wonderful Mart hits the mark. It’s a convenience store that, around eight months ago, sidled into the empanada game. These empanadas have a thin wheat dough that’s lightly fried, rather than the more typical baked pastry-style dough. The result is a less rigid, slightly chewy crust with a pleasant hint of breadiness. For fillings, you have a choice of beef or chicken for $3; veggie, chicken and cheese, or Buffalo chicken for $3.50; and bacon, egg and cheese for $5. I tried the beef and the veggie. Despite the frying, the empanadas don’t feel heavy. The fillings are simple and tasty, without any added spices, and the ketchup-mayo sauce provides a little kick. In short, it’s good, unfussy food at an affordable price: Wonderfully convenient, indeed. (The back counter of the store offers sandwiches that resemble Cubanos and smoothies โ€“ more to explore.)
