Lawn games, food trucks, local brews and live music have been a staple of Cambridge’s CX Summer Nights outdoor event series. On Thursday, performers Hill House The Band and ToriTori shared the bill with romance.
Cambridge city councillor Burhan Azeem, wearing his signature pink suit, proposed to his partner, Vijeta Saini, onstage during the event. She said yes.
Azeem invited Saini onstage as a volunteer during a “skit” he planned to perform with his friend Neil Aggarwal. They placed a blindfold on Saini and spun her around a few times.
When the blindfold came off, Saini opened her eyes to find Azeem on one knee in front of her holding a ring – one he’d custom designed after a binary star system.
“I’m still in shock,” Saini said after accepting the proposal. (It was also a surprise for the crowd at the last of the event series’ fourth year.)
The couple met in February 2023. Saini said she is looking forward to setting up a home with her now fiancé and to continue to be a part of the community they have built together.
“I really love my community here in Cambridge,” said Azeem, a third-term Cambridge city councillor. “I really wanted people to know the woman I love and for her to be seen and known and feel that same sense of belonging that I do,” Azeem said in an email to Cambridge Day.
The newly engaged couple said they hope to highlight their respective cultures’ shared emphasis on big community weddings with an open-invite wedding next summer, but have yet to make their plans.
