Boston has a long history of launching folks into comedy stardom in Asian spaces. Think Ding Ho in the Inman Square of the 1980s, The Comedy Studio’s origins in Harvard Square’s Hong Kong restaurant, and The Kowloon. “Crazy Funny Asians” producer Peter Liu, who also co-produces Popcorn Comedy in Davis Square’s Somerville Theater, wanted to create see-them-before-they’re-famous moments for Asian comedians. “Boston comedy started as a bunch of white guys performing in Chinese restaurants,” he says. “This show is like the opposite: It’s all Asians performing at a white establishment.” This month’s lineup includes Liu and fellow Boston comic Cynthia X. Wang, as well as four rising stand-ups from NYC and Chicago. And despite its focus, Liu insists there’s something here for everyone. If you’re not Asian, Liu says, joining the audience means you’ll still get to say “I supported that struggling Asian artist because I know their parents aren’t.”
“Crazy Funny Asians” at 8 p.m. Wednesday at The Comedy Studio, 5 John F. Kennedy St., Harvard Square, Cambridge. $20.
