A man was killed in a stabbing at a Norfolk St. apartment complex yesterday evening. The suspected assailant, Victor Rivas of South Boston, was found nearby by Cambridge and MIT police and arrested.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 7:52 PM to respond to a 911 call reporting that a man had been stabbed. Once inside the apartment building, officers found the victim, who has not been named, with serious injuries. Fire and EMS brought the man to a local hospital, where he later died.

In a statement issued Wednesday evening, the Middlesex District Attorneyโ€™s Office said โ€œThe preliminary investigation suggests that there was an altercation inside the apartment between the defendant and the male victim, who are believed to be known to each other. Both parties sustained injuries during the altercation.โ€

Rivas, 51, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. It is unclear at this time if his charge will be upgraded to homicide. His arraignment at Cambridge District Court is scheduled for Friday.

While the suspected perpetrator is in custody and the police believe there is no active danger to public safety, the statement called the investigation โ€œongoing,โ€ by their office, Cambridge Police Department detectives, and Massachusetts State Police.
