The Cambridge Rindge and Latin boys’ baseball is off to its best start in at least eight years, winning three more games to put its record at 4-0. On April 8, it defeated Boston Latin, 9-0, behind six shutout innings from Oliver Henke. He also struck out 13 and at the plate went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Stef Alexandrov also went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Joel Rojas-Cruz went 3-for-4 with an RBI. The defense played flawlessly, committing no errors.
On Friday, the Falcons defeated Lowell, 11-4. After two rocky innings to start the game, Alexandrov settled down to pitch three scoreless innings for the win. Logan Sherwood led the offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs. Henke went 3-for-5 with two runs, and Ari Maslan added an RBI triple.
CRLS defeated Concord-Carlisle on Monday, 9-2. Jasen Thomas pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out 11 to earn the win. Alexandrov went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Joel Rojas Cruze went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. Reliever Tate Schoenau, who had pitched a scoreless seventh inning against both Boston Latin and Lowell, pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the game.
Softball: The softball team (2-3) won consecutive games by the mercy rule. It defeated Boston Latin 29-16 on April 8 and Malden on Friday, 15-3. In the defeat of Boston Latin, Eleanor Holleran went 5-for-7 with an inside-the-park home run, five RBIs, and six stolen bases. Bronwyn Johnson, Marin Albrecht, and Caroline Orr each collected multiple hits.
Against Malden, Albrecht pitched five innings and struck out 13, surpassing 100 strikeouts in her career. Holleran hit three more inside-the-park home runs and drove in five runs. At the plate, Albrecht went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
On Monday, though, the team lost to Concord-Carlisle 15-3, in a game where the Falcons struggled in the field, committing eight errors. At the plate, Albrecht and Holleran each had a hit and an RBI.
Girls’ track: In its opening meet, the girls’ track team defeated Acton-Boxborough on April 8, 74-61. Naomi Baldwin finished first in the the 400 meters (1:03.35) and the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.06). In the 200 meters, Sloan Judson won in 28.74. Neva Hartman won the 800 meters (2:27.43), Fiona Litman finished first in the one-mile run (5:34.05), and Sophia Juanes Seto won the two-mile run (12:05.71). The 4×100-meter relay team of Alanii Hodges-Figueroa, Baldwin, Mira Tanwar, and Judson took first (53.02), as did the 4×400-meter relay team of Juanes Seto, Litman, Hartman, and Caie Theilow (4:34.97).
Boys’ track: The boys’ track team lost to Acton-Boxbrough in its first meet of the season on April 8, 69-67. In the 800 meters, Benjamin Richards won in 2:03.21. Liam Eldridge won the one-mile run (4:42.79), and Gael Berzin finished first in the two-mile run (10:52.25). The 4×100-meter relay team of Laurent Valentin, Miel Henry, Jermain Houston, and WInslow Lively won with a time of 45.77. The 4×400-meter relay team of Parker, Richards, Thomas Dewitt, and Leon Ibanez Fraile also finished first (3:51.84). Gryffin Marks won the javelin throw (120-01), Jarehl O’Bannon finished first in the long jump (20-04), and Valentin won the triple jump (37-07).
Boys’ lacrosse: The boys’ lacrosse team (2-2) defeated Boston Latin on Tuesday, April 7, 11-7, lost to Concord-Carlisle on Thursday, 16-1, and defeated Somerville on Saturday, 8-1. Against Boston Latin, Xander Whitters had three goals, one assist, and two ground balls. Quentin Maucher had two goals and one ground ball. Ellis Anderson won 18 out of 20 face-offs, had one goal, one assist, and 12 ground balls.
In the loss to Concord-Carlisle, James Karnath scored the Falcons’ lone goal. In the defeat of Somerville, Ellis Anderson had three goals and six ground balls and won all eight of his faceoffs. Kamai Green had a goal, an assist and six ground balls. Goaltender Owen Goldstein had eight saves.
Girls’ lacrosse: The girls’ lacrosse team (2-5) lost to Boston Latin on Tuesday, April 7, 10-4, and to state powerhouse Concord-Carlisle on April 8, 15-0. The Falcons competed hard in both losses and bounced back with a 19-1 defeat of Everett on Monday. In Monday’s game Kyra Burke and Ella Schoenau each scored four goals. Gwen Whitters, Mel Kelso, Maude Ullmann, and Lina Ouadani all scored their first-ever varsity goals.
Boys’ tennis: The boys’ tennis team (1-6) was swept in all five matches by Boston Latin on April 8. It lost a tight contest with Boston Latin Academy on Thursday, 3-2, was beaten 4-1 by Andover on Friday and was swept Monday by Concord-Carlisle. Jeremy Nohrnberg at first singles won a three set-thriller against Boston Latin Academy and also won his match against Andover. Noah Eastley won his second singles match against Boston Latin Academy.
Girls’ tennis: The girls’ tennis team (0-5) lost to Boston Latin 5-0 on April 8 and then 4-1 to Concord-Carlisle on Monday. P.C. Koester and Natalia Naef won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at first doubles.
Girls’ rugby: The girls’ rugby team lost to Weymouth on Friday, 29-0. The Falcons kept the score down with several crucial kicks to force Weymouth to operate from its zone.
