The June 5 op-ed on Ahern Field creates a misleading frame: that supporting children’s play means supporting artificial turf. It does not.

Children need recreation, movement, and outdoor time — but safe play does not require treating synthetic turf as the only option.  Pediatric research recognizes the benefits of green space and nature exposure for children’s physical activity, mental health, cognitive development, and well-being.

The op-ed also relies on the idea that turf greatly expands play time. “Usable,” however, should mean safe and practical for users, especially children — not merely technically bookable. Yet the article’s own rainy-day example falls apart: Cambridge Youth Soccer emails from May 29–30 show that turf did not prevent cancellations.

Games were canceled at Danehy, a turf field using the type of surface the City is proposing for Ahern. Russell was not a one-for-one replacement for canceled Ahern games; families were told the normal schedule was canceled and that Russell would offer modified activities and scrimmages. Turf may be more bookable on paper, but this example does not prove that turf creates more safe, usable play time.

The full picture is not children’s play versus natural grass. The real question is whether the City has shown, with evidence, that artificial turf at Ahern would provide more safe, usable hours than a properly maintained natural grass field, while also addressing heatstormwatermicroplasticslifecycle costsdisposal, and community access. Comparing newer turf to older turf does not answer that question.

Ahern can support youth sports and remain a healthy, natural, multi-use public space. Before moving forward, the City should engage all stakeholders and obtain an independent side-by-side analysis comparing the proposed “advanced” turf system with natural grass. The City Manager’s report does not provide that analysis. It justifies artificial turf after the fact.
