I’ve walked, jogged, biked, and rowed along the Charles River for 20 years,
appreciating the fresh air, the wildlife, and, at this time of year, the
changing foliage. The beauty of the Charles River wasn’t always a given;
just a few decades ago the waters were full of pollution and unsuited for
recreation. Thanks to dedicated work by numerous organizations, advocates,
and volunteers, the Charles has been restored.

November gives us an opportunity to vote Yes on Question 6, which
would dedicate existing sales tax revenue from sporting goods to protecting
water and nature, like how tolls or gas taxes are used to fix roads. This
would raise the money currently allocated to conservation from
approximately $25 million of one-off bond funding to an up to $100 million
dedicated fund to protect forests, watersheds, and other habitats. These
habitats arenโ€™t just for fuzzy critters; we and our children live, breathe, drink, and recreate in them.
ย
Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m voting Yes on Question 6, and I hope my neighbors will join
me.

When I chaperone a Scouts camping trip, we walk through the site at the end
picking up trash, even when itโ€™s not our own. We want to leave the space we
enjoy in a better condition than we found it. Yes on 6 allows us to do this
on a grander scale across all of Massachusetts, protecting vital places
like the Charles. Itโ€™s an investment worth making for our future and our
kidsโ€™ future.
