There are bad french fries, there are good french fries, and then there is my favorite, which I like to call fancy fries: ones that have been elevated by some kind of interesting topping. I found the Bon Me chainโ€™s spicy togarashi fries to be surprisingly flavorful and a good discovery for the area. Togarashi is a Japanese spice blend that includes red chili pepper, sansho pepper, either hemp seeds, poppy seeds or both, sesame, ginger, citrus peel and nori. It has some spice, plus a touch of acidity and umami, and it packed a decent punch when it came to flavoring the fries. (Which, Iโ€™ll note, were very good themselves, with those great, craggy edges. Being tossed in togarashi made them that much better.) The bowl came out piping hot, with an accompanying spicy mayo for dipping. It was good, though a regular mayo might have worked better with the spiciness.
