A small empanada shop popped up recently in a short strip of storefronts on Memorial Drive, and I decided a warm, filled pocket of goodness was just what I needed during this very cold January week. Che! Empanada offers a variety of flavors, most of them classic; there are some more out-of-the box options such as eggplant and blue cheese. I tried the “beef clasico” and thought it was pretty solid. Though I thought the outside shell could’ve been a bit crispier, the filling was excellent: rich and meaty but also distinctly flavorful, thanks to some nice spices. And staff will warm it up for you in the oven, which is key if you’re taking it for an on-the-go Snack. It felt a smidge overpriced for what it was (a similarly sized and similarly delicious beef empanada from Buenas in Somerville’s Bow Market is $4.25), but I had no regrets.
