Buenas sells frozen empanadas you can make at home, plus accompaniments such as pebre and chimichurri, at places including Formaggio Kitchen and Dave’s Fresh Pasta. But doesn’t food always taste better when someone makes it for you? I stopped by Buenas’ storefront in Bow Market, the Union Square gem (with so many enticing eateries it just might deserve a return Snacking visit), and got a perfect beef empanada from Buenas. It came out steaming hot, the pastry a well-cooked light golden brown. The empanada was slightly crispy on the outside without being at all dry inside, and the ground beef filling was saucy and rich. The filling was supposed to be beef, onion and chimichurri, and initially I was disappointed to not taste that promised chimichurri – I thought it would have balanced the meatiness nicely – but the empanada was so good that after one bite, I forgot about the chimichurri altogether.
