Raj Patel runs a free Monday comedy show called Laughaholics in Inman Square.

Inman Square was a hub of comedy innovation in the 1960s and ’70s, thanks to now-legendary venues such as The Proposition theater and Chinese restaurant and club called the Ding Ho. But since ImprovBoston left the area in 2008, there have been precious few weekly shows to renew that potential. Raj Patel, the mind behind Laughaholics, wants to change that. A transplant from Worcester, he says he arrived to a “sleepy” scene in Boston and wants to bring it a “younger, more unhinged energy.” For him, that means curating a weekly night that gives audiences unfiltered and diverse viewpoints from some of the funniest people in the area. While it’s too early to know if his show will have the innovative energy that sparked the careers of comics such as Paula Poundstone and Steven Wright, it’s exciting to know that the setting for Laughaholics – the Turing Tavern (no word on if you have to be able to pass a Captcha to get in) – could be one of those landmark names in another 50 years.

Laughaholics from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays at The Turing Tavern1281 Cambridge St., Inman Square, Cambridge. Free.
