After years of planning and preparation, Cambridge Community Television has opened at 438 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square, Executive Director Susan Fleischmann said Friday. That completes an estimated $2.3 million move from the rear of 675 Massachusetts Ave., also in the square, where the station had outstayed its lease and run out of room.

In February, it was estimated the move wouldn’t be complete until Oct. 25, but the station had actually moved July 6, remaining closed due to construction. An announcement Wednesday pointed to Sunday as a renewed rollout for its Computer Central space, editing space and some studio programming.

Additional space in the new facility increases CCTV’s capacity for multimedia and technology training and “enables further strengthening the capacity of everyone in the community to engage in civic dialogue,”  Fleischmann said.

And the location — supplanting some of Economy Hardware — presents opportunities for greater collaboration with area arts and cultural organizations, such as the neighboring Central Square Theater and Dance Complex, she said. A new Teen Work and Learning Center will allow for expansion of CCTV’s School Year Production and the Summer Media Institute for teens.

This transition comes with the announcement the station is getting the Overall Excellence in Public Access Programming award from the national Alliance for Community Media for an unprecedented 10th year.

In addition, the alliance will present Fleischmann with the Stoney-Koning Award for furthering humanistic communication. This award is given annually to a person making media accessible to the general public and promoting democracy and free speech through community use of media.

Fleischmann has been with CCTV since it opened it 1988, and has served as executive director since 1993. Both awards will be presented at the Alliance’s national convention on July 29 in Tucson.
