Student walkout around sexual assault concerns shows persistence of problem since 2016 protest

Nearly one-quarter of the city’s high schoolers walked out of classes Tuesday to bring attention to the impact of sexual assault and harassment on students, despite a similar walkout being held more than five years earlier leading to an “action plan” that got enthusiastic support in 2017.

Lines in the sand are being drawn in the district’s decision to suspend two teachers without pay for a day for declining to participate in administering the MCAS tests to students. A letter supporting the two educators signed by 189 educators was delivered to superintendent Kenneth Salim’s office.
