A 22-year-old man was shot in the back of the neck at about 2 a.m. Friday at Bishop Allen Drive and Columbia Street, near Central Square, police said.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors told Cambridge Police the bullet hadn’t hit the spinal column or other vital parts. It appears the victim will come out of surgery well, said Dan Riviello, the police department’s communications specialist.

The shooter isn’t known, Riviello said, but police do not believe the shooting was random and already have “several solid leads.”

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call the Cambridge Police Detective Bureau at (617) 349-3370 or the department’s front desk, 24 hours a day, at (617) 349-3301.
