A 53-year-old man and his young son were stabbed early Thursday in their home by an unknown assailant who fled after the attack, police said.

The attack came at about 1 a.m. on Pearl Street in Cambridge, and police responded to a report of a break-in and stabbing.

The father sustained multiple stab wounds, while the son sustained one superficial wound to the chest, said the departmentโ€™s communications specialist, Dan Riviello.

Both were taken to a hospital for treatment, and both victims are still hospitalized, Riviello said Thursday afternoon.

Cambridge Police detectives are working with Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorneyโ€™s Office to investigate.

Anyone with information helpful to the investigation is asked to call (617) 349-3370.
