A 53-year-old man and his young son were stabbed early Thursday in their home by an unknown assailant who fled after the attack, police said.

The attack came at about 1 a.m. on Pearl Street in Cambridge, and police responded to a report of a break-in and stabbing.

The father sustained multiple stab wounds, while the son sustained one superficial wound to the chest, said the department’s communications specialist, Dan Riviello.

Both were taken to a hospital for treatment, and both victims are still hospitalized, Riviello said Thursday afternoon.

Cambridge Police detectives are working with Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office to investigate.

Anyone with information helpful to the investigation is asked to call (617) 349-3370.
