A homeless couple were stabbed late Thursday at Massachusetts Avenue and Inman Street, police said. The area is in the heart of Central Square, on its busiest street.

The man had been stabbed in the chest and was taken to the hospital, although his injuries weren’t considered life-threatening, police said in a Friday press release. The woman was cut on a hand and also treated at a hospital.

The attacks took place shortly before 11:30 p.m. The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, about 30 years of age, who fled up Massachusetts Avenue on foot, police said.

“Investigators do not believe this was a random incident,” police communications specialist Dan Riviello said.
