040316i FoCRLS Whole Foods MarketFrom Friends of CRLS, March 21, 2016: Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School is partnering with four local Whole Foods Market stores to raise funds for the city’s only public high school.

All three Cambridge Whole Foods Markets (on Prospect Street, River Street, and Alewife Brook Parkway at Fresh Pond), as well as the Somerville Whole Foods Market on Beacon Street, will participate in 5% Day for Friends of CRLS on Wednesday – meaning 5 percent of all purchases made at the stores will benefit students and faculty through six programs: scholarships, student travel fellowships, faculty innovation grants, the “It Takes a Village” college success program and the Unsung Heroes Awards and Faculty Distinction Awards.

The funds expected from Wednesday’s shopping event may make many other CRLS opportunities possible, including the funding of an in-school food pantry for students and their families.

The organization estimates that one out of every 60 Cambridge residents is a student at the school (more than 1,800 students out of more than 107,000 residents), and nearly half of the students are from low-income families. “Whole Foods shoppers on April 6 will be investing in the current and future health and vitality of our youth and our community,” said Elaine Schear, the nonprofit’s executive director.
