Annual Dance Party to be June 29 at City Hall
The details of Cambridge’s Dance Party has been set, with the free annual event set to take place for four frenzied hours between 7 to 11 p.m. on its traditional last Friday in June.
Though it started with only 500 attendees in 1996, crowds have been around 25,000 to 30,000 in recent years, more than adequately filling the space in front of City Hall with dancers to DJ-spun music who are accentuated by a sophisticated light show as dark falls.
The street is closed off in front of City Hall to allow for crowds, which grew to 5,000 by 2012, reportedly doubled the next year and hit 12,000 by 2014 before reaching its current levels. It’s a reminder that Cambridge is both a big city and small town.
“The Dance Party historically has been a safe, family-friendly event with minimal to no arrests taking place,” said Jeremy Warnick, director of communications and media relations for Cambridge police. Security includes a mix of uniformed and non-uniformed officers, K9s and Community Services staff to remind participants to celebrate responsibly, he said.
Questions about the selection of a DJ – there have been criticisms that music for the party has been narrowly chosen, ignorant of the variety of genres enjoyed by a diverse city population – went unanswered by the city’s Maryellen Carvello in the City Manager’s Office.
The party runs from 7 to 11 p.m. June 19 at City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square. Massachusetts Avenue is closed to traffic between Prospect and Bigelow streets during the party, and the No. 1 bus line ends in Central Square at 6 p.m., but is expected to resume full service at 11:30 p.m.
Let’s hope the DJ remembers that there are over 100 languages spoken and many international/ multicultural members of the community. I hope he doesn’t rely on a drum machine to cater to millennials and high school students when there is so much cultural richness in Cambridge. This means Old World music from other countries- Salsa, Soca, Cadance, Zook, Senegalese, Irish, Cuban, even American Swing. Here is an opportunity to unite generations through music throughout the night– not just before 9:00 to be dominated by manufactured top 10 sounds after that. I will continue to push for international expression and great dancible, infectious music from ALL OVER THE WORLD and not just for narrow segment of society!!
