The gym chain Planet Fitness said Monday that it will open in July at 625 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square – its second location in Cambridge after one in Porter Square. (Update on June 27, 2023: Planet Fitness says it has opened in Central Square.)

It replaces a long-closed Boston Sports Club at the location.

That chain’s parent company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2020 after the Covid pandemic battered its business model, closing multiple locations and regrouping under the New York Sports Club banner. The brand name Boston Sports Club took another hit when a membership buyer called Work Out World kept charging clients annual fees without their consent. It was sued by then attorney general Maura Healey, reaching a payout settlement in February 2022.

The new Planet Fitness takes over a 15,000-square-foot space but is “brand-new, state-of-the art and exceptionally clean,” said James Innocenti, chief operations officer for the Planet Fitness franchise group Supreme Fitness, in a press release.

“I couldn’t be more excited for an affordable gym option to be opening in the square, offering a way to stay mentally and physically fit,” said Michael Monestime, president of the Central Square Business Improvement District. “You’ll see me working out there.”

When Boston Sports Club had 13 locations in Greater Boston, it charged just under $60 monthly. Planet Fitness is $10 monthly.

The gym is expected to open at 5 a.m. weekdays and be open until 11 p.m. weeknights and 10 p.m. Friday, with 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekend hours.

Planet Fitness was founded in 1992 in Dover, New Hampshire. According to the company, as of March 31 it had more than 18.1 million members and 2,446 locations in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Panama, Mexico and Australia.
