The vanilla vanilla cupcake from Lyndell’s Bakery. (Photo: Madeleine Aitken)

To exist as a bakery for more than 130 years is impressive in and of itself. To also keep using the same recipes and practices, and to be the oldest remaining scratch bakery in New England, is truly special. Lyndell’s Bakery is a 19th century monument in Ball Square that serves a huge selection: doughnuts, macaroons, cookies, half moons, not to mention pies, breads and even custom cakes. And after stopping in, I completely understand how it has stayed in business for so long. The double vanilla cupcake is one of the best I have had in my (cupcake-full) life. The base was soft and moist, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The frosting was sweet and creamy, indulgent without being cloyingly sweet. It was on the smaller side, which I appreciated: It’s a satisfying treat, but it leaves you room to try something else on their menu.
