This man is believed by police to be involved in an incident Jan. 4 that left two people with stab wounds.

A suspect wanted in connection with a January double stabbing in Cambridge’s Porter Square was taken into custody Jan. 24, police said Wednesday.

Joshua Barreau, 23, of Lowell, was arrested in Boston after Cambridge police detectives identified him as a suspect. He is charged in Cambridge District Court with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

A lead from the public led detectives to identify Barreau, police said. An arrest warrant was requested, which Boston Police used upon finding Barreau.

Boston officers saw a person fitting the description of the stabber and stopped him at Hanover Street and Surface Road in Boston – at Boston’s Public Market between City Hall and the North End – at around 3:20 p.m. Jan. 24, Cambridge police spokesperson Robert Goulston said. Barreau was arrested without incident and appeared in a Boston court the same day. It was not clear when he would appear in Cambridge District Court on the Porter Square crime, Goulston said.

In that incident Jan. 4, police got a call at 7:35 p.m. from the Halal Guys eatery at 15 White St. in the Porter Square Shopping Center, with the sounds of a struggle in the background. Officers arrived to find two people stabbed with a knife – one in the stomach and the other twice in an arm – at least one of whom was a Halal Guys worker. Police looked for the stabber in the MBTA Porter Square train station, where video showed him throwing away a knife that police soon found.

Barreau, however, was not found that day, leading to police seeking the public’s help in identifying who may have committed the stabbings that day.

Arrests for Barreau date back at least to the spring of 2019, when he was 18 and charged with assault and battery in Lowell; again in that city on March 31,  2021, he was arrested on a Peabody District Court warrant on a charge of armed robbery; and in March 31, on another charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing severe bodily injury.
