Every spring without fail, as the weather warms and the doom and gloom of New England winter lifts, I feel an intense and specific need to have a smoothie. Although it’s arguably a drink, I generally consider smoothies to be snacks, so on a beautifully sunny day last week, I went to Playa Bowls for the Aloha, made with mango, pineapple, banana and coconut milk. I was pleased to find that I could taste each of those flavors, and it was everything a smoothie should be: fruity, flavorful, refreshing, bright. The downsides were that it was thinner than I wanted it to be and more expensive than I thought was fair, but most smoothies feel like highway robbery, so I guess it comes with the territory. Overall, it was a great bite – er, sip – that wholly satisfied my craving for something light and refreshing on a hot day.
