Shots rang out early Sunday on Fairmont Street in Cambridgeport, police said, the eighth gunfire incident the city has seen this year.

In a message to residents of the Cambridgeport and Riverside neighborhoods on Monday, police said they responded to reports of gunfire at 38 Fairmont St. at 1:24 a.m. A police log entry reports that two shell casings were found by detectives, and scanner reports showed they came from an alleyway between a neighboring apartment building.ย

No injuries were identified at the scene, but police said they were contacting hospitals to identify if anyone was treated for gunfire-related injuries in connection. Robert Goulston, the departmentโ€™s Public Information Officer, said in an email that the department is โ€œinvestigating the shots fired and have not positively identified a suspect(s).โ€

The police response was prompted by ShotSpotter technology being activated nearby. This was the first confirmed ShotSpotter activation in Cambridge since a May 23 shooting at Donnelly Field, and the second of the year.ย

Though this is the first gunfire of the year in the Cambridgeport neighborhood, itโ€™s the third in July โ€“ and the fourth in the past month. The other two gunfire incidents this month have all occurred in The Port neighborhood, with one person injured in a July 17 shooting at 131 Harvard St.ย

Cambridge Police urge anyone with information about the Sunday gunfire to contact CPD detectives. This can be done anonymously by calling the tip line at (617) 349-9151, or online at cambridgepolice.org/TIPS.ย
