When I expressed the mediocrity of the vanilla cupcake at the Mike’s Pastry in Harvard Square, readers pointed us toward Royal Pastry, opened in East Cambridge in 1941 by a Sicilian couple and still run by the same family. There’s an enormous case of Italian and American sweets, and although I was tempted by all, I got a vanilla cupcake for the sake of comparison. The people had spoken, and the people were right: This was a great cupcake, and two dollars cheaper at that. The cake was light and the frosting was sweet, both with a good vanilla flavor. I didn’t like how Mike’s stored its offerings in a refrigerated case, meaning the cupcake was cold and hard when I got it – frosting should not need to be chewed. At Royal, I was pleased to find, things are kept room temperature, which was the icing on this already delicious cake.
