Generally speaking, the more money a comic makes, the less relatable their comedy becomes. Not the first time, Cristela Alonzo is defying tradition. A decade ago, Alonzo broke ground as the first Latina to create, write, and star in a network sitcom. After its woefully premature cancellation, she continued to make waves in the world of standup with two Netflix specials, โLower Classyโ and โMiddle Classy.โ Now, ahead of her recently announced forthcoming third special, sheโs making a stop at Somervilleโs Arts at the Armory. Alonzoโs a master of captivating storytelling, mining her upbringing in a Texas border town โ and how it contrasts with her current circumstances as she continues to rise in status โ for thoughtful, emotional and riotous laughs. Her presence on the East Coast is incredibly rare, so youโre definitely not going to want to miss her take on the most relatable laughs along her ride to the top (of the tax brackets).
Cristela Alonzo, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave., Spring Hill, Somerville. $28 to $35.
