Off-street parking law, Part I

Ordinance Committee, 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday. This committee run by vice mayor Marc McGovern and city councillor Paul Toner looks at adding a definition of โ€œflexible parking corridorโ€ to zoning law that will allow private parking lots to be leased for secondary uses โ€“ creating off-street parking that could more than make up for metered spaces removed from streets by the creation of bike lanes. The committee meets at City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square. Televised and watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.ย

Binney Street Park opening

Binney Street Park opening celebration, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday. This new public park at 322 Binney St., East Cambridge, features a dog run, seating areas and a segment of the Grand Junction Multi-Use Pathway.ย Light refreshments are provided as the ribbon is cut.ย Information is here.

Climate at the upper schools

School Committee School Climate Subcommittee, 5 p.m. Monday. This hearing chaired by Rachel Weinstein discusses school conditions with students from the districtโ€™s upper schools. The committee meets in the Dr. Henrietta S. Attles Meeting Room at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, 459 Broadway, Mid-Cambridge. Watchable online.

Off-street parking law, Part II

Planning Board, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The board does its look at proposed zoning alongside the City Councilโ€™s Ordinance Committee, which held a hearing the previous week. Adding a definition of โ€œflexible parking corridorโ€ to city law would allow private parking lots to be leased for secondary uses โ€“ creating off-street parking that could more than make up for metered spaces removed from streets by the creation of bike lanes. Also on the agenda is locking down the specifics on an update at MITโ€™s Volpe site redevelopment in Kendall Square, where the school is building on land found by shrinking the footprint of a federal transportation agency. The change on required โ€œinnovation spaceโ€ is to attract midsized, growing companies, as discussed in September 2023. Watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.
