Dear Cambridge Community,

We are delighted to share exciting news about Cambridge Day. After two decades, it is becoming a fully nonprofit news organization. We are especially pleased that Marc Levy will continue to be a part of our news operation as a senior editor, bringing his invaluable experience and dedication to this next chapter. Once we’ve raised sufficient funding to launch an expanded newsroom, we’ll recruit a publisher, an editor-in-chief and several journalists to scale our reporting.

At a time when many communities are facing a critical shortage of local news coverage, Cambridge News Inc., a community-driven organization, has stepped forward to ensure our city’s journalism not only survives but thrives. Our vision is ambitious yet clear: to be the trusted news source for all of Cambridge with broad and deep coverage of the topics that matter most to the community. We will include Somerville in our coverage area with topics of shared interest, and we will expand the community-based board for oversight and guidance of the organization.

This transition to nonprofit status opens new possibilities for sustainable growth through philanthropic support. We invite you to become a stakeholder in Cambridge Day’s future. Your tax-deductible contribution, which will be doubled through our year-end matching challenge, will help build a robust foundation for independent, in-depth local journalism that serves Cambridge with distinction. We’re especially grateful to the Cambridge Community Foundation for committing $100,000 toward our mission, and for establishing the Local News Fund that will help Cambridge News Inc. via community engagement and financial support.

Together, let’s ensure that Cambridge Day continues to tell our community’s stories, investigate its challenges and celebrate its achievements.

With gratitude,

The Cambridge News Inc. Board of Directors

Niko Emack, Raffi Freeman, Richard Harriman, Mary McGrath and Amira Valliani

With support from the Cambridge Community Foundation Local News Fund, Kristen Wainwright and O. Robert Simha

  1. In the spirit of community-based journalism, it would be useful to know a little something about each of these new board members and how they were selected. What was the role of the Cambridge Community Foundation, if any, in this selection? And how about presumed helpful major donors Kristen Wainwright and Robert “Bob” Simha? Bono is looking forward to seeing how this new arrangement evolves. Since The Harvard Crimson discontinued their weekday paper publication there’s a gap in desirable daily coverage. The Globe seems to be moving into this space recently, but why leave it to them to meet this obvious need for good local reporting. As The Ramones would say, “HEY! HO! LETS GO!”
