Two things appeal to me about Desi Dhaba: Itโ€™s open later than the typical Cambridge restaurant; and its varying selection of “chaat,” or Indian savory snacks. I occasionallyย find myself wandering into Desi Dhaba in that postdinner, predrinks lull around 10 p.m. The typical routine is to order one of its imported Indian lagers and select which savory chaat to pair with the refreshment. This time, I chose the sambhar idli โ€“ simply a steamed rice cake (idli) in a lentil-based stew (sambhar), sometimes considered a breakfast dish. The serving I had was mild and light in flavor and texture. No particular spice or seasoning stood out, but the warmth was comfort from the winter cold. The idli did make the overall dish feel more hearty, but was a little too soft and dissolved; perhaps an option to serve the idli on the side could have made it better.
