There are only a few things at Five Horses that are at or below our $10 cutoff point, mainly sides such as petite servings of mac and cheese, but the list includes this popular Spanish small dish, just some simple, skin-on fried potato chunks, a sprinkle of cotija cheese and a “spicy mayo” aioli – traditionally a mix of olive oil, smoked paprika and a tomato paste. It’s one of the top sellers at a restaurant that has made the somewhat daring choice to go french-fries-free (though it does offer tater tots), but I don’t think introducing fries would decrease the sales of patatas bravas significantly: This heap of hot potato served in a cast-iron skillet hits all the marks for a satisfying snack, down to the wonderful back-of-the-throat burn from the mayo that is the comfort-food equivalent of savoring a whiskey or brandy. I mean, five horses couldn’t drag me away.
