Learn about light pollution
Public Library, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The library hosts โThe Dark Side of Light Pollution,โ a talk about โhow you can safely light up your home, business and community without wasting energy, disturbing your neighbors or creating an unhealthy environment for humans and wildlife.โ Presented by Kelly Beatty, officer with DarkSkyโs Massachusetts. Scholarship review for seniors
Municipal Scholarship Committee, 6 p.m. Tuesday. The committee reviews applications for the cityโs annual municipal scholarship. The city will award at least five high school seniors with around $1,000. Applicants provide grade point averages, activities after school, their transcripts and more. The award is not need based but requires applicants to live in Somerville. At the Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Ave., Central Hill.
Smoothies and zoning
Zoning Board of Appeals, 6 p.m. Wednesday. The board reviews another extension request of a 17-year old zoning case to develop 56 Webster Ave. and 520 Columbia St. in Ward 2. The property ownerโs agent, Triad Alpha Partners, presented plans in May for โa proposed mixed-use development of two commercial buildings, one residential building and significant open space in the form of a neighborhood park and pocket plaza.โ Separately, a healthy-fast-casual chain, Tropical Smoothie Cafรฉ, wants to open a franchise in Twin City Plaza where Supercuts was. Tropical Smoothie Cafรฉ, which serves smoothies, salads, acai bowls and wraps, operates in 44 states plus Washington, D.C. Watchable via videoconferencing.
Pot shop and Dunks seek permit
Planning Board, 6 p.m. May 1. Haze of Somerville seeks to establish a cannabis retail shop on Mystic Avenue at the border between East Somerville and Assembly Row. The applicant, a minority-owned business, would be a second location for Simplicity Dispensary, which is opening soon in North Grafton. A Dunkinโ Donuts location wants to reopen near Assembly Row at 74 Middlesex Ave. after being displaced from 76 Middlesex Ave. due to construction of 74M, a life-sciences building.
