The Snapdragon gin cocktail at The Independent in Somervilleโ€™s Union Square.

I visited The Independent on Halloween because I had a few extra hours between work and donning my costume. The pubโ€™s natural fall vibes were enhanced by the bowl of candy by the host stand and classic Halloween tunes from the speakers. I sat at the bar with a few other diners ordering cocktails on a windy autumn evening.

The Snapdragon was how I started: a gin cocktail with lavender honey, cardamom, lime and ginger beer. Writing this column has made me into a gin cocktail connoisseur, which seems natural given my love for light and fruity drinks, and a lot of appreciation for the liquorโ€™s versatility. In this drink, its floral flavor was the primary feature, complimented nicely by the lavender and the spice of the cardamom.

The rum-based Snowblind from The Independent tastes almost exactly like a lime popsicle.

My second drink was called Snowblind, and it was made of rum, lime, orgeat, Finocchietto, maraschino and lime bitters. Served on the rocks with crushed ice, it tasted almost exactly like a lime popsicle โ€“ sour, refreshing and only vaguely sweet from the rum.

The Independent has a gorgeous rustic fall vibe, with candles and floral arrangements on tables. The drinks are simple and enjoyable, great music flows across the bar, and paired with the friendly staff, make for a cozy and delightful fall evening.
