Cambridge Rindge and Latin goalkeeper Winslow Lively, who saved a penalty kick Saturday night, in action in fall 2025.

The Brown brothers led Cambridge Rindge and Latin boys’ soccer into the state Division 1 semi-finals for the first time in over two decades, as Michael and Rhys Brown both scored in a 2-1 victory over Weymouth.

Senior co-captain Michael Brown scored the game’s first goal on a header, connecting on a ball over the top from Brennan Loud. Brown then sent an assist to his brother, senior co-captain Rhys Brown, to put CRLS up 2-0. Both brothers have committed to play soccer at Emerson College next fall.

Weymouth, the 8th seed, struck back to cut the lead in half. With five minutes left, Weymouth received a penalty kick. CRLS sophomore goalkeeper Winslow Lively saved the penalty to keep the score 2-0. It was Lively’s third penalty kick save after making two in the first-round shootout victory. Weymouth scored with about a minute left in the game for the final score of 2-1.

“Something changed after the Lexington shootout. We’ve become fearless,” said Niko Emack, head coach of the boys’ soccer team. “Overcoming that experience brought this group together in a way that few teams or organizations ever get to experience.” (Disclosure: Emack is a member of Cambridge Day’s board).

Emack added that “I told them that whatever happens next, they’ve earned the right to talk about this season for the rest of their lives. We take on Saint John’s Prep in the next round, and the whole program is fired up to represent our city in a public vs private matchup.”

Loud and Noam Kilian, a junior, were named men of the match.

Weymouth ended its season 12-3-4. Cambridge, the 9th seed, is now 12-3-3. It will play top-seed St. John’s Prep (17-1-2) in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Glatz Field in Danvers.

This story was updated to add a quote from the CRLS head coach, to correct when Weymouth scored its goal, and to add information about the location and time of the quarterfinal game. he spelling of Noam Kilian’s name was also corrected.
