For the second time this year, both Cambridge and Somerville Public Schools will be closed due to a major snowstorm. The National Weather Service increased projections for snowfall in Greater Boston to 18 and 25 inches, up from from 12 to 24 inches, and winds of up to 75 miles per hour that will generate blizzard conditions, unlike Januaryโ€™s snowstorm.

The state declared a state of emergency ahead of a storm for the first time since 2022. “This is a serious storm,” Gov. Maura Healey said during a press conference Sunday. “At the outset what I want to say to the public is this is one to take seriously.” She said power outages and downed trees may be inevitable.

Schools were closed for two days after January’s storm.

Local universities also shifted their schedules. At 10 a.m., the Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced classes will be held remotely. Its campus will be closed to all non-essential personnel starting at 11 p.m. tonight. The school says it plans to reopen Tuesday at 7 a.m. Harvard followed suit this afternoon, canceling in-person instruction and shifting classes to virtual learning. It told non-essential employees not to report to work Monday and to work remotely if able. Lesley University told students in-person classes were canceled, so only online classes would be held. Tufts University closed its campus to non-essential personnel and canceled a number of classes on Monday.

Cambridge and Somerville both declared snow-related emergency parking bans, Cambridge’s of 9 a.m. today, Somerville’s as of noon.

In Cambridge, city administrative offices, libraries, and Department of Human Service program locations will be closed, according to Jeremy Warnick, director of media relations. Trash collection and recycling will also not occur on Monday.

Somerville has also closed all city offices, all libraries and other city facilities except the Overnight Warming Center at 42 Prescott St., which will be open all day Monday until 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. It delayed trash and recycling pickup, as well.

On Monday, the Cambridge City Council and School Board were supposed to hold a joint roundtable working meeting. That meeting will be rescheduled.

Somerville’s school committee meeting on Monday will be held remotely.
