Investigators have recovered evidence indicating multiple shots were fired near St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 233ย Harvard St., in The Port neighborhood of Cambridge.
ShotSpotter technology heard three rounds fired at around 8:30 p.m., while a caller said they heard four or five shots fired at Sennott Park, according to scanner reports. The park is behind the church; in addition to shells found by police, an officer soon found a park garbage can that looked like it had been hit by gunfire.
The caller said they heard somebody screaming โrunโ; there were reports of a man in a white mask and black hoodie running down Harvard Street toward Kendall Square.
There are no reports of injuries, but police said in a 9:45 p.m. email that they were still investigating.
This is the 10th gunfire incident of the year; the most recent was six days ago, but it was unusual โ a road rage incident in which one driver swung at the otherโs head with a metal pipe and the man whoโd been hit in the head shot the other man twice, once in the hand or arm, once in the upper chest, police said. This is the fifth gunfire incident of the year in The Port. Most have been like this one, with no victim found.
There were only six gunfire incidents in all of 2023.
Cambridge Police urge anyone with information about the Sunday gunfire to contact CPD detectives. This can be done anonymously by calling the tip line at (617) 349-9151, or online at cambridgepolice.org/TIPS.
