Some area artists are running a Somerville Art Fair and showcases at Bow Market in Somerville’s Union Square.

Feeling artsy this evening? Bow Market hosts a Somerville Art Fair with showcases throughout the year in its Upstairs event space highlighting the paintings, drawings and various art media of six local artists and three judges.

Friday’s presents the art of the three judges. The showcases July 18, Sept. 5 and Nov. 21 host two artists each until the grand finale, the art fair, with work from all six artists Dec. 13.

The Somerville Art Fair’s purpose is to put “art within reach” for the benefit of the artists and the community, fair founder and judge John Lakov said.

Lakov started the Art Fair after participating in Somerville Open Studios a few years ago and drawing a commission for a piece at Bow Market’s Nook cocktail bar. After establishing a relationship with the Bow Market owners, Lakov was able to bring the vision of a “flexible art gallery” to life at Bow.

Each of the events will be a “community hangout” with food from sponsors Topo Chico, JP Lick’s and Ben and Jerry’s and drinks from the Upstairs cocktail bar, said Carlie Febo, a judge, artist, event co-organizer and director of marketing and lead photographer at Bow Market. Each event will “get emerging artists’ names out there,” she said.

Works by Julia Emiliani feature in the Nov. 21 showcase at Bow Market.

At the first art fair, judges Lakov, Febo and Michael Talbot present 3D animation, photographs and illustrations, pairing older and newer artworks that highlight progress over time, Febo said.

Christine Brown creates illustrations and textile designs that will be on display at the Sept. 5 showcase. The Art Fair is a great opportunity because collaborating with other artists “is my life,” Brown said.

Julia Emiliani, an artist at the Nov. 21 showcase, is a commercial illustrator and graphic designer by day and a painter of “bold, colorful” fruits, plants and nightscapes. With the foot traffic at Bow Market and the artists behind the fair, Emiliani said “it felt like a no brainer” to apply for a slot in the events.

Febo hopes Bow Market continues “to turn into a place where” community members can “see local art.”

Somerville Art Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bow Market, 1 Bow Market Way, Union Square, Somerville. Free to enter.
