Allocating preservation funds

Community Preservation Act Committee, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. A setting of percentages for funds divided between three categories โ€“ affordable housing; open space and recreation; and historic preservation โ€“ and for which projects get approved. Every year, this committee votes how to allocate money from the Community Preservation Act, a state law that helps local communities โ€œpreserve the character of their community.โ€ Cambridge residents adopted it in 2001, allowing a 3 percent surcharge on property taxes to pay for projects. At least 10 percent of funds must go toward each of the three areas, and the state adds funding too. Watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.

Harvard Square hotel project

Cambridge Historical Commission, 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Sept. 4. An application for a certificate of appropriateness for a project returns from an Aug. 14 meeting. Developers plan to move the 1846 Harriet Jacobs house at 17 Story St. in Harvard Square to the corner of Story and Mount Auburn streets and restore it. They hope to put up a building behind of up to 67 hotel rooms and roughly 50 residential units. The plan involves demolishing a neighborhood building at 129 Mount Auburn St. According to the proposal, the historic house will become the hotel lobby and include a small cafe โ€“ but the commission voted for a landmarking study of the house that could be an obstacle for the project. Watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.
