Alarmed over obesity rates, the Indian health ministry suggested in July that people use moderation when enjoying snacks such as samosas and jalebis (fried dough). Predictably, this caused a panic that high-calorie foods would be sullied with warning labels; just as predictably, it made me crave samosas. Food Land, the North Cambridge grocer with Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani goods, sells ready-to-eat takeout potato-and-pea and chicken versions on weekends – and they are possibly the lowest priced in town and, especially in the vegetarian version, almost thrillingly delicious despite being served cold. Unlike many restaurant versions of the samosa, these nearly fist-sized pastries are yellow with spice (cumin provides the color, coriander and garam masala complement the flavor) inside the chewy fried dough. The chicken version is a sharp-tasting crumble, and smaller. But the closest sit-down restaurant samosas are $3.50 each to Food Land’s $2, and still not as rich.
