A better way for Cambridge
Voters have a clear choice between City Council candidates schooled in practices that have sown division and distrust, and other candidates with experience in business, academia, civic institutions and government and who are committed to building trust, a shared sense of purpose and progress on our major challenges.
Cambridge’s bike lane mandate hurts us all
The scope of the bike lane mandate is so broad and complex that the City Council might reasonably have put it on the ballot for residents to vote on in a municipal referendum before acting on it. We are finally starting to see the beginnings of the kind of vigorous, contentious, factual debate that is needed for democracy to work and that we as Americans expect.
Why cycling safety is a divisive topic in cambridge
So far the Cycling Safety Ordinance has led to piecemeal, neighborhood-by-neighborhood installation and review of new sections of cycle lanes. The process in North Cambridge and elsewhere has been less than transparent and flawed by poor communication with affected residents and businesses.
The myth of the virtuous cyclist
It is not surprising that Jeff Bezos favors policies that will shutter local businesses or that a young cyclist on the sidewalk in Harvard Square believes it’s okay to break norms others depend on. But it is surprising and shocking that our local government leaders would adopt such an attitude.
