Thank you to everyone who ran for elected office in 2023, to advocacy group leaders and workers, family members of candidates and campaign workers, Election Commission, polling workers and police officers and to the voters.
The Affordable Housing Overlay made some residents think more seriously about housing affordability, and it made Cambridge itself begin to address this issue citywide. Finding examples of development that meet the AHO’s stated goals is harder to do.
Cambridge is providing a textbook example of how a wealthy, progressive community can commit environmental suicide despite having Green Roof Zoning, a Tree Protection Ordinance and an Urban Forest Master Plan.
It may be that one of the healthiest places you could live in Cambridge is filled with dead people, as Mount Auburn Cemetery’s roughly 5,000 trees provide the kind of canopy that is sorely lacking in most of the city.
Zoning is again a hot topic in Cambridge. Information is flying, but like any issue, facts and context matter. We can’t speak to zoning history everywhere in America, but we can speak to Cambridge zoning history.
City councillors should not oppose neighborhood preservation efforts, particularly based on flawed and downright deceptive arguments. Let the East Cambridge Neighborhood Conservation study proceed as planned.
