Honk! invades Cambridge
The fifth Honk! Festival of Activist Street Bands ran this weekend, clogging Somerville’s Davis Square with delight and, on Sunday, passing in the form of the Honk! Parade through Porter Square to wind up at Oktoberfest in Harvard Square. Here are some photos that merely hint at the exquisite weirdness and creativity of the event — a Somerville-based phenomenon that at one time would have called Cambridge home, as one resident said. Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band was much less stationary than usual.
There were some 23 troupes marching, but their sheer numbers were matched by watchers spread along the parade route.
Video is the only way to get the proper sense of this contraption, a kinetic sculpture with rotating portions that made it seem like a benevolent take on the mechanical spider in the awful “Wild Wild West” movie (1999).
Too bad that the Climate Emergency Action Group contingent in the Honk Parade didn’t get more press. We were about 20 people in our long underwear reminding folks to turn down the heat and put on a layer of clothes. Next year we’ll had some music and get more attention. Wanna join us?
