Police are investigating a confirmed gunshots incident that took place overnight at Cherry and School streets in The Port, as well as if there was a gunfire incident nearby on Main Street.

ShotSpotter technology, which listens for gunshots in the city, detected shots in the area at approximately 12:57 a.m., but two anonymous callers reported hearing multiple gunshots as well, police said. Police responded to calls about possible shots fired in the Main Street area, and spoke to a person on Cherry Street who reported hearing gunshots, seeing one man running from the sound and a dark vehicle driving away.

Officers were not able to find the car, a suspect or injuries or victims – matching a pattern followed by many of last year’s gunfire incidents – and at first couldn’t find shell casings after canvassing the area, police said.

Officers re-canvassed the area later Thursday and were able to find one shell casing on Cherry Street near School Street, police said. They issued a press release about the incident shortly after noon.

This is the third actual gunfire incident of the year, ignoring an incident with blanks in the Agassiz neighborhood in May; there were more than a dozen gunfire incidents in 2018, most without known victims. The majority from last year took place in The Port neighborhood, north of Central Square, just like Thursdays.
