The lentil soup at Andala Coffee House. (Photo: Madeleine Aitken)

Price: $6.50

Andala Coffee House, on the edge of Central Square, is a cozy spot with orange walls, mismatched chairs and a quirky, maximalist approach to decor. The name is actually a bit misleading – although Andala does serve coffee, the hefty food menu shouldn’t be overlooked. Full of Middle Eastern classics from tabouli to kufta to falafel, you can’t go wrong here. I picked the lentil soup, which came out piping hot with a generous serving of toasted pita on the side. The soup was flavorful, well-spiced with a solid kick. (The pita was needed.) It was garnished with scallions, which added a nice bite, and came with lemon wedges, which added some brightness. My only complaint was that it was a bit thin, but between the large bowl and the several slices of pita, it felt like a great deal for a nice warming snack on these cold, wintry days.
