The honey glazed doughnut from Union Square Donuts. (Photo: Madeleine Aitken)

Price: $4

From Union Square in 2013 to Coolidge Corner, Assembly Row and Harvard Square now, plus the Time Out Market and Boston Public Market, Union Square Donuts is probably the most prominent name in the Boston doughnut scene. (Aside from, of course, dear old Dunkin’.) And it’s well worth its hype. Though it has some funky flavors reminiscent of the mid 2010s doughnut craze it emerged into – think maple bacon and Vietnamese coffee – it also has plenty of classics. I got a honey glazed, and I was impressed. The doughnut itself was almost like brioche, with a texture that was somehow pillowy and springy at once. The glaze was thick enough to arguably be entering frosting territory (no complaints here) and had a prominent vanilla flavor that overpowered the honey. Although it caught me off guard, I really liked the vanilla. It made this a pretty perfect doughnut.
