Considering Chilacates, Los Amigos and Annaโ€™s Taqueria are like the holy trinity of fast casual Mexican spots here โ€“ each have five to 10 locations in the area โ€“ it seemed like it was time to give one the snack test. At Chilacates, the menu is the usual for a Mexican counter service place: burritos, quesadillas and tacos, with protein options including birria, carne asada and carnitas. At the Central Square location, I snacked on an excellent tamale. It came out steaming hot with a side of pico de gallo, which was a nice addition. The masa was textured perfectly and had just the right amount of bite, and inside were peppers and onions. This was a surprise because I had ordered the cheese tamale (there were also chicken and pork tamales), but not an unpleasant one. I didnโ€™t taste cheese at all. I actually didnโ€™t miss it.
