Two exciting photography happenings are open as of this week – one in Somerville, and another with the work of an artist with deep ties to the Somerville community.
Boston photographer George Annan has an opening event at &C Studio on Sunday in a space at Joy Street Studios. The reception is sold out, but the exhibition will be up for a week after the event by appointment only. Annan has kept his cards closed to his chest and hasn’t shared preview images – not even with Cambridge Day. Still, with his record (Annan has made work for Puma and The Wall Street Journal), the show is sure to be worth a visit. To book a time, potential visitors can email hello@andcruz.com.
Iaritza Menjivar, a photographer who works as the Somerville Arts Council’s events manager, has artwork in the Boston City Hall exhibition “Displacement,” which opened Aug. 15. It explores the resilience, solidarity and cultural preservation efforts of the six artists on view, all artist-activists with unique immigration experiences.

Menjivar’s photographs are striking. In “dusk Guatemala,” Menjivar captures a shot of a robin’s egg blue house at twilight. A girl sits opposite a boy, both looking tired and contemplative. A lush set of palm trees loom in the background. In “Domingo,” Menjivar portrays a bird’s eye view of a bright red family dining table strewn with limes, soup dishes, cups, spices and a bottle of Coca-Cola. The image bursts with all the joy and chaos of a routine family meal.
This is just one more laurel for Menjivar. In 2022, WBUR selected her as one of its “Makers: 15 Artists of Color Leaving an Imprint on Massachusetts.” She’s had work on view at the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Somerville Museum and the Fort Point Arts Community. Menjivar also won the St. Botolph Emerging Artist award in 2016.
