A vibrant painting called “El Baile del Colibrí” (“The Dance of the Hummingbird”) was installed at Bow Market last weekend, filling a long-empty wall that read “your art here.” The piece was commissioned for Bow Market’s “Small is Beautiful” call for art this spring, but at 8 by 10 feet, it packs a big punch.
Sabrina Gonzalez is the lucky artist selected for the commission. She moved to Somerville in January, and Bow Market was one of the first places she checked out.
“As an artist who had just moved to a new place and had no connections,” Gonzalez said over email, “I was curious about how I could get my art on that wall. Lucky for me, the owners of Bow Market posted a call for art shortly after that, and I knew I had to apply.”
Meant to signify the market’s support of pop-ups and other small businesses, the “Small is Beautiful” theme signifies the outsized impact that something small can have.
Gonzalez’s piece is striking. Her use of vivid reds and massive floral compositions are reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe. The hummingbird, a bright shade of green, hovers within a golden circle. It’s Gonzalez’s first major public art piece, but hopefully not her last.
Though the space is known for its makers’ markets and pop-ups, it’s heartening to see something more permanent finally grace the walls.
