Gunfire was reported Sunday at the Harvard Square red line T station, with calls coming in at 2:14 p.m., leading to a search for a man who ran from the station wearing a gray hoodie and ski mask. No injuries were reported via police scanner.
Three men may have been involved, arguing on the inbound platform before shots were fired. The train that was pulling out was returned to Harvard Station amid questions of whether a shooter was aboard, according to scanner reports, though police spokespeople said later that it was believed four to five shots were fired at the train as it pulled out. Harvard University sent out a message to its community at 2:48 p.m. to shelter in place as Cambridge, transit, state and Harvard police searched for the suspect. โPlease enter the nearest building and stay there until all clear is given,โ the alert said.
The MBTA paused service between Central and Alewife stations due to the police activity at Harvard, telling passengers that shuttles were being dispatched. The shuttle service continued even after the shelter in place order was lifted by Harvard at around 3:20 p.m.
Police were still investigating Sunday afternoon with video from the MBTA that suggested the suspect was in their late teens; and a witness who reported seeing a suspect flee on JFK Street toward Memorial Drive. Shortly before 3 p.m., MBTA detectives were taking over the investigation, according to scanner reports. As evening arrived, there were no updates: no victims reporting to hospitals and no suspect in custody, while T operation was resumed.
MBTA Transit Police posted photos Monday of the suspect:
