All the way over on the East Coast, quality Hawaiian food is not easy to find, but we have our Manoa on an unassuming Somerville corner near Porter Square. What stood out to me immediately was the warmth and friendliness of the staff โ a sharp departure from the stereotypical aloofness of one of our busy Boston restaurants. Not only does Manoa offer generous servings of Hawaiian-style poke, it serves a handful of fun Hawaiian desserts. On a recent visit, I got a recommendation from a friend to try the guava cake. Its sponginess absorbed the syrupy, slightly tangy, guava compote nicely. Topping it off is a cream that also has a hint of guava flavor. At times, the blend of syrupy and spongy bordered on soggy, but I found the gooey, creamy and cakey mess to be imperfectly perfect. Hurry, though! Manoa closes for much of July for rest and renovations.
