I know, the pumpkin spice latte (or “PSL”) may feel like an overhyped fad, but when you really stop and think about it, isn’t it kind of crazy to put a savory fruit in coffee? The version of this latte at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts’ cafe is a gourd-forward beverage that will leave you inspired and satisfied. I tried the latte on a crisp autumn morning and felt I could swim in the deep foam layer that met my lips. Superb. Don’t be fooled by the “spice” in the name, though – CSCA’s housemade syrup is just pumpkin puree plus some sweet notes, without classic spices such as cinnamon or clove. Fortunately, there are dozens of cafes in Cambridge and Somerville that make their own pumpkin spice syrups, so if you’re craving cardamom or are nuts for nutmeg, you’ll be in luck. For me, I just want that pumpkin.
