A man was shot at in his car but escaped unharmed early Wednesday, police said, as the Wellington-Harrington neighborhood saw its first reported gun violence of the year.
Gunfire was detected by Shotspotter surveillance technology at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday at Evereteze Way and Cambridge Street, a largely residential area with some ground-floor businesses and a gas station.
A man with a gun โconfronted an individual who was parking their car,โ police said in a noon email. โAs the victim tried to drive away, the suspect fired several shots, at least one of which struck the vehicle and shattered the rear window.โ Scanner reports indicated the front right passenger seat window was damaged, too.
The victim was an off-duty Cambridge police officer, WCVB reported. Physically unharmed, the victim drove almost immediately to the police station in East Cambridge near Kendall Square, while police went to the scene and quickly found shell casing evidence of the incident.
This is Cambridgeโs eighth gunfire incident of the year, but the first in Wellington-Harrington. Whereas the most recent prior gunfire had been heard at Sherman Street and Stearns Street in Neighborhood 9 on Oct. 9, the Wellington-Harrington neighborhood hasnโt experienced gun violence since May 23, 2024, when two people were shot at Donnelly Field.ย
In this yearโs eight incidents of gun violence so far, three have resulted in victims, including one death in January.
A witness told police theyโd heard arguing before the gunfire, according to scanner reports.
